Chapter Fourteen

Jake pulled into the car park of the hotel and switched off the engine. They’d driven for three hours and that should be enough. He’d left the motorway thirty minutes back and started looking for a suitable place to stay.

Beside him, Christa was sound asleep, shadows under her eyes.

He wondered how long he could put off telling her what was going on. At least as much as he understood of what was happening.

The hotel was a large, modern, red-brick structure, and catered to the business crowd in the nearby town. They wouldn’t be noticed here. He needed to register, but didn’t want to leave her sleeping. He touched her lightly on the arm. “Wake up, Christa.”

She stirred sleepily, her lashes flickering open. “Where are we?”

“At a hotel. I’ll go register. You wait here.”

She gave a quick nod and unfastened her seat belt, reached behind her for the bags and sat with them clutched on her knee. When he got back five minutes later, she was sitting in exactly the same position, staring straight ahead. She was still in shock. But they could afford to take a day or two—while he thought about his next move—to recover.

He opened the door, and she flinched. “Sorry, I’m a little jumpy.”

“It’s to be expected. Come on, I’ve got us a room.”

“One room?”

“One room. Two beds. I thought you might not like being alone right now.”

“No, probably not.”

He grabbed the bottle of scotch from the seat then opened up the back and picked up the bag containing the weapons Madsen had procured for him.

The room was on the second floor. They took the stairs, and he let them both in. It was big, with two double beds and a separate sitting area. Jake locked the door behind them and sank onto the sofa. He was still carrying the scotch, and he unscrewed the top and took a pull straight from the bottle. His arm burned like a bitch. Hopefully the scotch would take the edge off that. He should have gotten some painkillers from Madsen, but he’d had other things on his mind and had hardly noticed the pain back then. It had increased with his distance from the city.

Christa stood just inside the door, still clutching the bags. She looked a little ragged at the edges. Okay, a lot ragged. As if she’d been wearing the same clothes for way too long. A smile twitched at his lips, and her eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“You look a little—like you might want to shower.”

“Well, being kidnapped and car crashed will do that.”

“Why don’t you get cleaned up?”

“I am so on that,” she said and disappeared into the bathroom.

A minute later, Jake heard water running. He tried not to imagine her naked and took another slug of scotch. He rose to his feet then kicked off his boots and crossed to the bed nearest the door. He sat, his back resting against the headboard, his legs stretched out. On the nightstand, there were two glasses in plastic wrappers,
